It was discovered on October 16, 1977 by Cornelis Johannes van Houten, Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels at the Palomar observatory.
The asteroid is named after the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch

Edvard Munch (1863–1944) was a Norwegian painter, graphic artist, early representative of expressionism and the best-known Norwegian visual artist internationally.
He made his debut in 1883 and produced large quantities throughout his life, around 28,000 works exist after Munch, making him probably one of the world's most prolific visual artists. He bequeathed around 20,000 works to the municipality of Oslo.
The Munch Museum in Tøyen opened in 1963. A new museum opened in Bjørvika in 2021
