It is a main belt asteroid discovered on 22 October 1906 by August Kopff at Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory. Triberga was named after the German town of Triberg.

August Kopff (February 5, 1882 – April 25, 1960) was a German astronomer who studied and worked in Heidelberg, getting his PhD there in 1906 and he then joined the Humboldt University of Berlin where he became the Director of the Institute for Astronomical Calculations.

He discovered comet 22P/Kopff, C/1906 E1 and 84 asteroids, including the Trojan asteroids 617 Patroclus and 624 Hektor.

The lunar crater Kopff is named after him, as is the asteroid 1631 Kopff.

It is operated by the Center for Astronomy at the University of Heidelberg. The Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory houses the historic Bruce Double Astrograph, a dual 16-inch photographic refractor acquired through a grant from American philanthropist Catherine Wolfe Bruce. Obtained by astronomer Max Wolf around 1900.
