On September 14 the Catalina Sky Survey discovered a new comet that has been designated C46K1R1 and is currently awaiting an official designation from the MPC. The comet has brightened rapidly as it is about to make its nearest approach to Earth this orbit on October 6. In these images taken on October 2 the comet was magnitude 11.9 with a coma 4' wide and a tail 2' long, 31.7 million miles (51.1 million km) from Earth moving 4 degrees per day across Earths skies. At nearest approach to Earth on October 6 the comet will be 29.4 million miles (47.3 million kilometers) from Earth moving at 5 degrees per day across Earths skies. The comet will be at perihelion in its orbit on October 25.
