Details:
Came across these atmospheric optics, ice crystal phenomena while enroute to Cedar Rapids, Iowa from Washington DC last Wednesday, 9/30/26. We were climbing out toward a FL300 cruising altitude, when above the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia I spotted a somewhat ragged 22 degree halo surrounding the Sun. I began photographing with the iPhone 14 ProMax. As the climb continued, the ice crystal conditions apparently began to change, and the halo evolved into an interlocked double halo with parhelia, a parhelic circle and I even thought I saw a parry arc. Eventually we passed through the halo making cloud layer and above the deck into blue sky. At first I thought perhaps an internal reflection between the multi-paned aircraft window was causing an overlaid reflection, but upon review, in previous frames the double halo did not exist, and similarly in post frames, the halo appeared as one. Maybe Dr Tony would like to weigh in on this one.
