It is a main-belt asteroid discovered on September 25, 1960, by Dutch-American astronomer Tom Gehrels
and Dutch astronomers Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld and Cornelis Johannes van Houten at Palomar Observatory.
It is about 4.4km in diameter, making it larger than 99% of all the asteroids.

Heinrich Louis d'Arrest (13 August 1822 – 14 June 1875) was a German astronomer born in Berlin.
As a student at the University of Berlin, d'Arrest was also working with Johann Gottfried Galle to
search for a possible new planet.
On 23 September 1846, he suggested that a recently drawn chart of the sky
in the same region of Urbain Le Verrier's predicted location for a new planet,
could be compared to the current sky
to seek for a new planet.
Neptune was discovered that very night.
