Details:

Is a large, main-belt asteroid orbiting the Sun between Mars and Jupiter. Discovered in August 1953 by astronomer Karl Wilhelm Reinmuth at the Heidelberg Observatory. It is named in honor of Johann Gottfried Galle, the astronomer who discovered the planet Neptune in 1846 It is about 26.3km in diameter.

Johann Gottfried Galle (9 June 1812 – 10 July 1910) was a German astronomer from Radis in Germany working at the Berlin Observatory who on 23 September 1846, with the assistance of student Heinrich Louis d'Arrest, was the first to see and identify the planet Neptune. Urbain Le Verrier had predicted the existence and position of a possible new planet, and sent the coordinates to Galle, asking him to verify.

On 23 September 1846, Heinrich Louis d'Arrest suggested that a recently drawn chart of the sky in the same region of Urbain Le Verrier's predicted location for a new planet, could be compared to the current sky to seek for a new planet.
Neptune was discovered that very night.
Galle is also honored with craters on the Moon and Mars, and a ring of Neptune.

Karl Wilhelm Reinmuth (1892–1979) was a German astronomer. He discovered 395 asteroids. The first was 796 Sarita, which he discovered in 1914. He worked at the Landessternwarte Heidelberg-Königstuhl observatory at Heidelberg in Germany from 1912 to 1957. Among his most famous discoveries are :
1322 Coppernicus, the two Apollo asteroids 1862 Apollo and 69230 Hermes. Also the Trojan asteroids 911 Agamemnon, 1143 Odysseus, 1172 Äneas, 1173 Anchises, 1208 Troilus, 1404 Ajax, 1437 Diomedes and 1749 Telamon. He also discovered 5535 Annefrank, which was later visited by the Stardust spacecraft.

He discovered two comets, the periodic comets 30P/Reinmuth and 44P/Reinmuth. The asteroid 1111 Reinmuthia is named after him (and discovered by him, a practice that was later disallowed).
